Ashgabat International Airport, formerly Saparmyrat Turkmenbashi International Airport, is one of the five international airports in Turkmenistan. The airport is located 10 km northwest of the capital city of Ashgabat.
Before the Ashgabat airport, the old port was opened in 1994 and was named after the country’s first President, Saparmyrat Niyazov. The new airport terminal opened in September 2016 after being completely redesigned and rebuilt, and after the south runway was moved and extended to be parallel to the north runway.
The airport, which has 8500 m² of VIP Terminal Building, is one of the ports with the highest private jet traffic in the country.

History of Ashgabat Airport during and after the USSR
The history of Turkmenistan’s civil aircraft dates back to 1927, when the first airline connecting Chardzhou to Tashauz via Tourtkul and Novo-Urgench was opened. The first airport in Ashgabat was built in 1932, and this port was used during Soviet times only to service flights within the USSR.
After the collapse of the USSR, the first modern airport terminal in Independent Turkmenistan was opened in 1994. In 2012, the Turkmen government authorized an international tender for the reconstruction of the airport in Ashgabat to be named “Oguz Khan”. Polimeks, a Turkish construction company operating in Turkmenistan since the late 1990s, won the tender. The new airport was opened on September 17, 2016 by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow.
The new airport, which has a very unusual terminal design in the shape of a hawk, covers an area of 350.000 m2. The airport has a passenger terminal, a VIP terminal, a cargo terminal with an annual cargo handling capacity of 200.000 tons, a new air traffic control tower, a maintenance hangar for three narrow-body aircraft, new fueling stations, food service, fire station, flight simulation, repair and maintenance buildings at the airport, parking space for 3.000 vehicles, a civil aviation school and a medical center.
Places to visit in Ashgabat
The capital Ashgabat, the largest city and trade center of Turkmenistan, plays an important role in the tourism sector with its historical sites.
Among the main places to visit in the city are the National Museum, which is located in front of Kopet Mountain and reflects the history of the country to its visitors, the People’s Hakydasy Monument Complex, which was built in memory of the Turkmen citizens who lost their lives in the 1948 earthquake and the World War II, the Independence Square where the country’s important ministries are located, the Carpet Museum, which houses the world’s largest textile carpet, the Lenin Statue in a small park, the Fine Arts Museum with Soviet and Turkmen works, the Azadi Mosque, which is architecturally similar to the Blue Mosque, and the Wedding Palace with its Surreal style architecture.
Transportation from Ashgabat Airport to the city center
There are different alternatives for transportation from the port to the city center in Ashgabat, where the city traffic is not heavy. The most comfortable and fastest way to reach the center is to use the taxis departing in front of the airport terminal building. These taxis providing 7/24 service, offer safe transportation for their passengers.
One of the means that can be used to reach the center of Ashgabat is the buses located outside the port. Buses no. 1, 18, 22, 58 depart every hour and provide transportation to many points of the city.
There are offices of companies that provide different car rental services available in the port. Passengers who want to reach the center with their private vehicles or by renting a car can reach the center in approximately 30 minutes by using the M37 highway located near the airport.
