History of Ivato Airport

The first grass runway for aeroplanes in Antananarivo was put into service in 1927. In 1929, the French Air Force purchased a site at Ivato and established Madagascar’s 1st military squadron. From 1935 an international passenger connection was opened and in 1936 the first domestic connection from Mahajanga to Diego Suarez round trip.

Since the country’s independence, the authorities of the time wanted to make Ivato the capital’s international airport. The new complex was inaugurated on 24 June 1967.

In 1973, the French air base 181 operating at Ivato airport was definitively transferred to Reunion Island and its buildings were transferred to the Malagasy armed forces.

Ravinala Airports took over the concession of Ivato Airport in 2015 and started construction of the new terminal in 2017. This new terminal was inaugurated and put into service in December 2021. The new terminal is equipped with walkways to connect the aircraft to the terminal

Places to visit in Antananarivo

Antananarivo, the centre of Madagascar Analamanga Region, has the most populous population in the country. The city has a lot of historical and cultural heritage.

Among the places to visit in the country are Rova Manjakamiadana, known as the Queen’s palace, Andafivaratra Museum, one of the most beautiful examples of baroque architecture, Anosy Lake, an artificial lake in the centre of the city, Haute-Ville District with its magnificent architectural and natural beauties and Independence Avenue, which is considered as a meeting point.

Ivato airport – city centre transport guide

The only way to reach the city centre from Madagascar Ivato Airport is by public transport. The buses departing from the bus stops located at the exit of the terminal are usually timed according to the landing times of the flights. Buses take 30-35 minutes to reach the city centre.

A more comfortable and convenient alternative to the buses is to use taxis waiting outside the terminal. There is a day and night tariff for taxis and since the same fares are usually charged, there is no need to bargain.

Another alternative to reach the city centre is to use the local and foreign car rental services within the airport.
