History of Brunei Airport

Commercial air transport in Brunei began in 1953 with the establishment of air service links connecting Brunei Town (now Bandar Seri Begawan) to Anduki in Belait District. The first flights connecting Brunei to British Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak, Singapore and overseas destinations were primarily provided by Borneo Airways and Malayan Airways.

The growing popularity of air travel in the 1970s led to a significant increase in civil aviation. Suddenly the old airport was inundated with activity beyond its capacity. This prompted the government to look for a new location to build a modern airport. A new airport was built at Mukim Berakas in the Brunei-Muara District, as this area was easily accessible from anywhere in the country. The airport started operations in 1974.

In 2008, the completion of a study reviewing the necessary expansion and changes was announced and a plan was soon drawn up. The plan consisted of different phases and included upgrading the existing passenger terminal building and the cargo terminal. The first phase of the plan was completed on 1 October 2013 with the opening of the new arrivals hall. The airport’s capacity was to be increased to three million by the end of 2014. Once Phase 1 was completed, Phase 2, which involved the construction of a new terminal capable of handling eight million passengers, was launched in 2022. Finally, the runway was extended to allow larger aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747 to land easily.

Brunei airport transport routes

There are alternatives such as taxi, bus and car rental from Brunei Airport to the city centre. The buses passing on the road at the exit of the port are one of the most frequently used ways to reach the city centre, but the bus hours are not certain and it may be necessary to wait for a long time from time to time.

Apart from buses, taxis can be used for immediate transportation, but since taxis do not have taximeters, it may be necessary to bargain before getting on the vehicles. There are also offices of different private car rental companies in the airport.
