Oumtounsy Airport opened on June 23, 2016, while the 27th Arab League summit was being held. The port, which started service instead of Nouakchott International Airport, which is 25 kilometers away from the city center, was opened by the President at the time, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.

Transportation From Nouakchott Airport to the city center
There is no public transportation available from the airport to the city center. Taxis are used to reach the city center and since taxis do not have a meter, it is necessary to negotiate with the drivers.
It is possible to rent a car from private car rental offices located in the port, but what should be noted here is that there are frequent police inspections throughout the road. Although the police generally speak French, their grasp of other languages is weak, which can cause communication problems.
Passengers who want to reach the city center with their private cars can drive approximately 3,5 km via the N1 road at the airport exit, then connecting to the N3 road in the west direction, and can reach the center in about 10 minutes by following the city center sign.
