History of Sochi Airport

The original aerodrome, was built to protect Russia’s Black Sea coast during World War II. Construction took place between July 8 and September 1, 1941, on the site of the liquidated state seed farm “Chernomorets”. By order of the Department of Civil Aviation, the site became an airport, established on November 23, 1945.

In 1956, the first terminal building (now the old building) and runway-1 were built. In 1957, approximately 35.000 passengers and 1.000 tons of cargo passed through the airport. From 1960 to 1965, passenger and baggage lounges, a 200-room hotel, radio navigation and landing systems were added to the airport as passenger traffic steadily increased. The Red Banner of Labor was awarded to the airport in August 1966 for its high performance.

Passenger traffic increased from 902.000 in 1965 to more than 2,3 million in 1990. Since its opening in 1957, the airport has served more than 60 million passengers. Regularly scheduled international departures and arrivals began in 1981. The original destinations were Bratislava, Budapest and Prague. The airport was later expanded to include flights to the Middle East and Western Europe.

Sochi International Airport was privatized in 2006 after the Federal Property Fund held an auction to sell 100% of the airport’s shares. “Strategy-South”, a subsidiary of the Basic Element group, bought the airport for 5,5 billion rubles.

In 2007-2013, Basic Element spent 14 billion rubles ($410 million) on the airport renovation. Finally, a 4.000 m² VIP Terminal was established at the airport, which was expanded and modernized with the investments made.
