The history of Kotoka Airport serving the capital city of Accra
Kotoka International Airport was originally a military airport used by the British Royal Air Force during World War II in 1946. The facility was handed over to civilian authority after successful withdrawal by the military. In response to globalization and the increasing demand for air travel at the time, a development project was initiated in 1956 to convert the structure into a terminal building. The project was finished ahead of schedule in 1958.
In 1969, Accra International Airport was renamed Kotoka International Airport in memory of Lieutenant General EK Kotoka. In 1990, a phased program was initiated to develop Kotoka International Airport. The first phase began in 1991-1993 and included the rehabilitation and asphalting of the runway, the renovation of the passenger terminal and control tower block, the construction of the Arrivals/Departures Hall, the construction of the Transit Hall, the construction of the private freight terminal and the installation of new navigational aids.
The second phase started between 1997-2005, aimed for expanding and renewing the arrivals/baggage reception hall, expanding the capacity of the freight terminal by 60%, reorganizing the duty-free shops according to international standards, extending the runway by 550 meters, a special apron for construction freight aircraft, renovating and expanding the departures check-in area, installing the baggage handling and screening system, improving the departure/migration area, and constructing the terminal forecourt (now the Airport Square) to separate the arrival and departure areas.
The third phase was launched in 2009 and includes the rehabilitation of taxiways, the main passenger apron, drainage systems, 21 runway landing zones, rehabilitation and expansion of fuel lines, installation of aviation ground lighting systems, provision of pavement management systems and construction.
Until the last quarter of 2010, there were only two boarding gates at Kotoka International Airport (KIA). GACL, in partnership with United Airlines and Star Alliance, built three additional boarding gates to improve facilitation. Subsequently, three more gates were built, increasing the number of boarding gates at KIA to eight.
Construction of the new 274 million USD Terminal 3 officially started on March 1, 2016, was completed in 2018 and opened to passengers on September 15, 2018.

From time to time, this hotel can shuttles provide service for a fee, but there is no guarantee of this.
Although there are different car rental companies in the port, it may be necessary to make a reservation in advance due to the shortage of vehicles.
