Poznań-Lawica Airport, full name Poznań-Ławica Henryk Wieniawski Airport, built in 1913, is one of the oldest airports in Poland and is located about 7 kilometres west of the centre of Poznań. The northern part has been used as a military airport since its foundation, while the southern part of the airport is used for civilian operations. The airport serves general aviation as well as international, domestic, private jet and cargo flights.

The airport is named after the Ławica neighbourhood, which is part of the city’s Grunwald district, but is actually located in the Yezice district.

History of Poland Poznan Airport

The airport was a German military airfield in 1913. On 6 January 1919, Polish rebels captured the airport with a total of 250 military aircraft parked in the port.

Since 11 July 1997, Port Lotniczy Poznań-Ławica sp. z o.o. (Poznań-Ławica Airport Ltd.) has been the operator of the airport. 39% of the shares are owned by the Polish state through the State Airport Company, 37% by the city of Poznań and the remaining 24% by the Wielkopolska Voivodeship. A new 1400 m² cargo terminal was opened on 2 February 2001 and a new passenger terminal on 4 November 2001. The expansion of the terminal was completed in 2013.

It is one of the most important places to visit in the city; Stary Rynek (Old Market Square) with its colourful houses, stone-paved square, magnificent fountains and medieval architecture, Ratusz Poznanski (Town Hall), one of the most important historical buildings of the city, Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island), home to the country’s first cathedral, Zamek Cesarski (Imperial Castle) with its Neo-Romanesque architecture, Fara Church with its baroque architecture built in the century and Malta Lake, an artificial lake.

Located approximately 7 kilometres west of the city centre in Poznan, the airport connects the city to other cities in Poland and the world.

The most frequently used method to reach the city centre from Poznan Airport is buses. It is possible to reach different points of the city centre with the buses located at the exit of the airport terminal building. Line 59 and 48 provide direct access to the city centre. Bus line 59 departs from right in front of the T3 terminal, while line 48 departs from Wyszeborska Street, which is 200 metres ahead of the terminal.

Taxis waiting in front of T3 terminal of the airport take approximately 20 minutes to reach the city centre and there is no shortage of taxis in general. There are also offices of car rental companies in the airport.

Passengers who want to reach the centre with their own vehicles or by renting a car can be in the centre within 15 minutes by using the A2 highway located at the port exit.
