The complex history of Minsk Airport

The first major airport of the region, Minsk-1, was built in 1933. The first aircraft to use the airport was a Kalinin K-5. In 1935, the first regular routes from Minsk-1 to destinations within Belarus began. In 1936, the first postal and passenger flight services to Moscow were launched. In the 1970s, the airport served more than one million passengers a year, setting a record in its region. It was Minsk’s main airport until the new Minsk-2 airport, opened in 1982, was named Minsk National Airport.

Construction of the Minsk-2 airport began in 1977. In 1979, a new runway with a length of 3640 m and a width of 60 m became operational. It was opened in 1982 after the necessary infrastructure of the Minsk-2 airport was prepared in 1981. The first passenger flight was made with a Tupolev Tu-134. In the same years, private plane traffic started to gain intensity.

On July 1, 1983, in accordance with the decision of the USSR Ministry of Civil Aviation, the “Minsk Second Joint Aviation Division” was created. This date was accepted as the foundation day of the airport.

Flights decreased after the USSR collapsed

After the start of regular flights at the airport after 1983, passenger traffic reached 2,2 million people until 1990. From 1991 onwards, the number of flights began to decrease due to the collapse of the Soviet Union and other resulting geopolitical changes. The number of passengers, which was 516.000 in 1998, decreased to 480.000 in 2000, and by the end of the year this figure was 400.000. This pause period lasted until 2007 and after this year an increase in the number of passengers using the facilities was observed. Due to the significant increase in passenger traffic in 2008, it was time for the airport to make important decisions. In 2008, a few renovations were made at the facilities. Although it did not make a big progress in terms of facilities in general, the number of passengers arriving at the airport in 2008 was 1.010.695, and this figure was recorded as 4.536.644 in 2018. Private aircraft rental intensity has increased significantly in 2018 compared to previous years.
