History of Liepāja Airport
The first military airport in Liepāja was built in the Northern suburbs in 1926 and was used for the training of young pilots. In 1935, the Liepāja branch of the Latvian Aviation Club, together with the city of Liepāja and the Defense Aviation, established the Liepāja Civil Airport with a hangar, repair shops, an office and a commander’s room.
Under the terms of the base agreement, a new Liepāja-Grobiņa military aerodrome was established in 1940. During the Wehrmacht offensive on June 22, 1941, the German Luftwaffe bombed the Liepāja airfield. In 1960, the airport was handed over to civil aviation and Liepāja Airport operated 6 flights a day to Riga, the capital of Latvia, and other major cities of the USSR (Leningrad, Moscow, Kiev, Minsk, Kaliningrad, etc.), carrying an average of 100.000 passengers and 900 tons of cargo per year.
In August 2008, Liepāja International Airport was providing air connections to 4 cities and it was possible to fly from Liepāja to Riga, Copenhagen, Hamburg and Moscow. There were 4 weekly flights to Riga, daily flights to Copenhagen and Hamburg, and 3 weekly flights to Moscow. In 2008 airBaltic stopped its flights to Liepāja Airport due to the global financial crisis. Moscow flights were temporarily operated by the Russian airline AtlantSojuz with Embraer 120 aircraft in 2009.
The airport was closed for infrastructure restructuring from 20 September 2014. It was reopened on May 25, 2016.
