History of Bahrain International Airport
The origins of Bahrain’s international airport can be traced back to 1927, when a charter flight landed in Bahrain. During the World War II, the airport was designated as Station #13 by the United States Army Air Forces Air Transport Command Central African Wing. The port functioned as a stopover and refueling place during the war. After the World War II, the port was used as a military port until Bahrain’s independence in 1971.
In 1971, airport expansion works were carried out and new passenger facilities were established, including a large area that could accommodate four 747 aircraft. In the 1980s and 1990s, several major airlines made the airport a destination. In 1994, a 100 million USD terminal was opened, increasing the airport’s maximum capacity to 10 million passengers per year.
In 2008, the airport was given to the management of the newly created Bahrain Airport Company under the roof of Gulf Air Holding Company, owned by Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund, Mumtalakat. In 2009, Bahrain Airport won the Middle East Best Airport Award at Skytrax 2010 World Airport Awards.
The airport’s new 1,1 billion USD terminal opened on January 28, 2021, increasing the airport’s capacity to 14 million passengers per year.

How to reach the city center from Bahrain Airport
There are many alternatives to reach the city center from Bahrain airport. Among these alternatives, buses are the most used. Line 1, Line 13 and Line 6 buses located outside Bahrain Airport can go to different points of the city from different routes.
Although not as regular as buses, minibuses departing from the port are also an alternative. However, minibuses are not preferred because of the large number of passengers and the uncertainty of departure and arrival times.
Although taxis have no stops outside the port, they can be seen waiting. Night and day tariffs are applied in taxis. The daytime tariff is used between 06.00-22.00 and the night tariff is used between 22:00 and 06:00 in the morning. However, it should not be forgotten that the taxis do not use a taximeter, especially when transporting tourists, and ask for an excessive fee. There is a chance to bargain before getting in the taxi.
Renting a private car is a preferred method as much as buses. There are offices of companies providing car rental services such as Budget, Sixt, Hertz and Europcar at the airport. Passengers who want to reach the city center with their private vehicle can reach the center in approximately 40 minutes by following the Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman main road.
