Philip S. W. Goldson Airport short history
The airport was built in 1943 with a 1,524 m runway, a taxiway and a small apron. A terminal was built in 1944 and officially opened on January 15, 1945. The airport was named after the late Belizean politician and editor Philip Stanley Wilberforce Goldson.
In the following years, the runway was extended by 2,164 m and the apron was expanded to 57,200 m². There are plans to expand the runway, apron and terminal to accommodate wide-body aircraft. The airport has a fire and rescue service.
On 1 April 2004, the Belize Airport Concession Company, a consortium of Belizean investors, took over the operation of the airport as part of the privatization process. The operating license obliges the company, among other things, to expand the airport. The Belize Airports Authority, a government entity, still owns the airport.
The airport was closed until October 1, 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out.
Belize travel guide
Belize, the smallest country in Central America after El Salvador, has become one of the most frequently visited regions especially by divers after it declared its independence in 1981.
The country is not very developed in terms of tourism. Tourists generally visit the country for two reasons. One of them is marine tourism, which appeals especially to scuba diving enthusiasts, and the other is the ancient city regions with the ruins of the Mayan Empire.
The country’s most interesting point of interest is the Great Blue Hole, the second largest underwater hole in the world and part of the Belize Barrier Reef, which is on Unesco’s World Heritage List. Another point of interest in the country is the ancient Mayan city of San Ignacio on the border with Guatemala.
