Construction of the airport began on 9 September 1989 and was unofficially opened in the summer of 1991 with the launch of more than 800 hot air balloons. The opening ceremony took place on 30 September 1991 at 11.00 am. The first scheduled flight took off at 6.30 a.m. on 28 October 1991 to Marseille. The airport cost 378 million francs, financed 35% by the State, 35% by the Region, 18% by the European Union, 7% by the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle, 3% by the city of Metz and 3% by the city of Nancy.

An extension of the runway (to 3,050 metres) was carried out in August 2006 to allow the landing of large long-haul aircraft and to develop the airport, especially in the field of long-haul transport. The airport changed its name to Lorraine Airport at the beginning of 2015 in order to increase its attractiveness compared to competing airports in Luxembourg and Germany and to become more identifiable for foreign customers.
