General History of Düsseldorf Airport
The airport, whose construction started in 1925, was officially opened on 19 April 1927. The airport, which served only in Germany for 2 years, made its first international flight in 1929. With the start of the World War II, the airport was closed to civilian use in September 1939 and started to be used by the army. After the end of the war, the airport was reopened for civilian use in 1948. In 1959, the first scheduled jet plane that landed in Düsseldorf was the Copenhagen – Khartoum flight of Scandinavian Airlines.
The airport witnessed the world’s largest fire in 1996 and many parts of it became unusable. As a result of the fire, terminal A and B buildings were completely became unusable and had to be rebuilt. Rebuilt in 1998, Terminal A was reopened and the rebuilding of the headquarters and Terminal B began in the same year. These constructions were completed in the middle of 2000.
Throughout the 2000s, the transportation networks to the airport in general were restructured and the New Düsseldorf Airport station was established. In 2015, after Lufthansa stopped the operations of Air Berlin at Düsseldorf Airport in 2017 for economic reasons, the density of the airport decreased considerably.

The fastest and most practical method from the airport to the city center is to use the S7 or S11 trains, which depart every 15 minutes. Apart from the train, buses depart from the bus terminals available outside the airport every 20 minutes.
