Buenos Aires Airport History
The airport is named after Juan Pistarini, Minister of Public Works during the presidency of Juan Perón, who laid the cornerstone of the project on December 22, 1945. The airport was designed and built by Argentine technicians. Its construction, which took four years to complete, was one of the most important projects in the five-year plan of Juan Perón’s first presidency. The airport opened on April 30, 1949. When it opened, it was the third largest airport in the world.
On 28 September 1998, the airport was taken over by Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 as part of the privatization of the National Airport System. In 1998 the local subsidiary of ADB (now a Siemens AG company) installed an individual light control and monitoring system. It was then responsible for the renovation of the two main runways 11/29 and 17/35. As of December 2002, both runways were re-categorized as CAT IIIa by ICAO.
In 2005, the port was named the best airport in South America at the 12th World Travel Awards in London.
In September 2009, construction began on “Ezeiza 2009”, designed by the MSGSSS studio. In the first phase of the project, warehouses and the old cargo terminal were demolished to make room for Aerolíneas Argentinas’ cabotage and international sector of the new Terminal C, which will be operational in October 2010, when Aeroparque Jorge Newbery is closed for maintenance work. Subsequently, Terminal B was demolished for the construction of check-in areas and the new international pier, and the new Terminal B pre-boarding sector was completed, which includes 3 dedicated positions with multiple telescopic gates to serve the Airbus A380.
Terminal C opened in July 2011; as of December 2011, its facilities were being used by Aerolíneas Argentinas, Air France and Alitalia for their operations. In March 2013, the 28,795 square meter terminal B was opened for use by Aerolíneas Argentinas and KLM.
In 2014, according to a survey of more than 90,000 users of the online travel company eDreams, Aerolíneas Argentinas’ VIP lounge Salón Cóndor in Terminal C of Ezeiza airport was ranked seventh out of ten lounges worldwide and first in Central and South America.
