Bilbao Airport history from the Spanish Civil War to the present
After various aviation experiences in Bizkaia province, the first steps were taken to build an aerodrome in Bilbao in October 1927. However, it was not until 1936 that the Aviation Administration gave permission to build an aerodrome in Sondika. When the permission was granted, the Spanish civil war broke out, but the construction of the airport was started and the port was used as a military air base at first.
In 1938, the second airport development phase began and it was decided to build an airport for civilian use at the Sondika site. After the decision, the works progressed very slowly and the new terminal building was only opened in 1950. On September 1, 1965, the name of the airport was changed to Bilbao Airport, which is still used today.
Between 1964 and 1965, an instrument landing system (ILS) and a weather radar were installed to detect storms; The runway was increased to 2000 meters and the apron to 12.000 square meters. The runway was paved in 1975, its direction changed to 10-28 as a result of the change in magnetic declination. In 1977, the parking lot was expanded, a connection lane was built, and an ILS system was installed. 12-30 runway with a length of 2.600 meters was opened in the same year and the airport was granted the first category status the following year.
A new taxiway with two rapid exits and a new apron were built in 1996. In May 1999, the new control tower became operational, facilitating aerodrome operations while providing a better overview of the airport. On November 19, 2000, the new terminal area was opened in the northern region.
