Since 1980, Bălți-Leadoveni has continued to develop as the most important passenger airport in northern Moldova. With the independence of Moldova in 1991, Bălți-Leadoveni became the destination of the state airline Air Moldova, the successor of the remaining Aeroflot aircraft.
