Cengiz Topel Airport, located in the Kartepe district of Kocaeli, is in the category of civil and military airports. The construction of the port, which is located 15 kilometers from the city center of Izmit, started in 1995. While it was planned to be opened in 1999, it suffered great damage in the earthquake in Turkey and its opening could only take place in 2011.
At the airport, which has 1 runway and 1 terminal building, domestic and international terminals are used jointly. Mainly Trabzon flights are made from the port, which has a parking lot with a capacity of 150 vehicles. Due to the industrial zones around the port, it is frequently used for business trips by passengers who take helicopter and private jet charter services.
The facility, which was a base of the Turkish Air Force in the years it was founded, takes its name from Cengiz Topel, who was captured on August 8, 1964 in an operation in Cyprus and died. Topel is the first loss of war for the Turkish Air Force in the history of the Republic.

History of Cengiz Topel Airport, whose opening was delayed due to the 1999 Earthquake
Cengiz Topel Airport was originally a Turkish Air Force facility. After the re-establishment of the aviation branch of the Naval Forces Command in 1968, the first naval helicopter pilots were trained by the flight school of the Turkish Land Forces Aviation Command at the Güvercinlik Ordu Air Base in Etimesgut, Ankara. The unit, which was formed at the same base in 1972, was transferred from Ankara to Cengiz Topel Air Base on May 19, 1973, due to its close location to Kocaeli Gölcük Naval Base within the scope of the protocol signed with the Turkish Air Force.
The base, which has been used jointly by the air and naval forces since 1973, was transferred to the Naval Forces Command on July 14, 1976, upon the instruction of the General Staff. Finally, on August 4, 1976, the Naval Air Base Command was established.
The base was allocated to NATO on October 28, 1981. In 1983, the helipads in Istanbul and Çanakkale were put into service so that the helicopters of the air station can also use it. In 2011, the airport was opened to public air traffic and Anadolujet operates domestic flights.
