History of Munich Airport

Munich’s previous airport, Munich-Riem Airport, was in operation from 1939 to 1992. Due to the increasing number of passengers and intensity, planning to move the airport to an alternative location began in 1954. The Bavarian government decided on August 5, 1969 to build a new aerodrome in the area called “Erdinger Moos”. After a long time following the decision, construction started on November 3, 1980. The new Munich airport became operational on May 17, 1992, and all flights to and from Munich moved to its new location overnight.

Between 1995 and 2006, the number of passengers doubled from under 15 million to over 30 million per year. That meant nearly twice as many passengers as the country’s third busiest airport. In June 2003, the construction of Terminal 2 was completed and opened as a special facility for Lufthansa and Star Alliance partners.

In June 2015, Condor announced that it plans to establish a long-distance base at Munich Airport starting from the 2016 summer season. Condor provided short and medium distance operations at the aerodrome and resumed long distance operations in the winter of 2013, after a six-year hiatus. In November 2015, Transavia announced their intention to establish the first German base at Munich Airport, which would consist of four aircraft serving 18 new routes by spring 2016. More than 40 million passengers passed through the airport in 2015, setting a record for that time.

In December 2016, Lufthansa’s low-cost subsidiary, Eurowings, announced that as of March 2017, it would establish a major base at Munich Airport with 32 new routes. In February 2017, Transavia announced that its entire base at Munich Airport would be closed by October 2017, after only one year of service, due to a change in business strategies and a negative economic outlook.

Munich Airport’s dynamic growth continued in 2018 with new traffic records and an all-time high of 46,2 million passengers. The airport also saw a strong increase in take-offs and landings, with 413.000 departures, a 2,2% increase in 2018. With 266 destinations, Munich Airport has increased its global network and is among Europe’s leading air transport hubs.

In February 2021, Lufthansa announced that it would take over most of Eurowings’ routes in Munich, except for a few domestic flights and flights to Palma de Mallorca and Pristina.
