History and establishment of Abu Dhabi Airport

Abu Dhabi International Airport was first opened on Abu Dhabi Island, in 1969. This simple facility was transformed into today’s Al Bateen Executive Airport.

Then, in 1982, ten years after the seven Emirates were combined to form the United Arab Emirates under the patronage and guidance of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi International Airport opened in its current form.

In the first years of the airport, the only way to reach the port was by private vehicle or taxi. Abu Dhabi’s bus network continued to be built between the 2000s and 2010s, and bus service began in a standardized fashion in mid-2010.

At the end of 2011, Abu Dhabi authorities signed a letter of intent for similar pre-approval facilities in Aruba, Canada, the Bahamas, Bermuda and Ireland. Etihad airlines made its first flight from the facility to the USA on January 25, 2014.

Rotana Jet was another airline based at the airport. However, it suspended all flights indefinitely in 2017.
