Recent history of Rhodes Diagoras Airport

Civil aviation in Rhodes began after the World War II, at the location of the nearby military airport of Rhodes Maritsa Airport. The only airport of the island, Maritsa was providing for the need until 1977. However, especially in the summer months, Martisa became insufficient due to the increasing traffic, and the need for a new airport arose.

The new “Diagoras” airport was put into service in 1977 and gradually took over all flights to Martisa. In the following years, improvements such as expansion of the taxiways, platform and airport buildings were made at the airport. Due to the increase in the number of passengers in 2005, the new terminal building covering an area of 60.000 m² was opened.

With the agreement signed between the Fraport AG/Copeluzos Group joint venture and the state privatization fund in December 2015, the privatization of Greece’s Rhodes International Airport and 13 other regional airports was completed. Fraport AG/Copeluzos Group has undertaken the operation of the port for 40 years.

Rhodes travel guide

The island of Rhodes, the largest of the twelve islands of Greece, has hosted many civilizations throughout history. From the Dorians to the Byzantines, from the Ottomans to the Italians, many nations took over the administration of the island from time to time. Thanks to its vibrant history, the island of Rhodes has become a culturally rich holiday destination.

The Old Town, which best reflects the spirit of the island and has an intense touristic activity, is one of the first places to visit in the island. Mandraki Harbor and Windmills, where the maritime activities of the island have been carried out throughout history, Lindos, founded in the 10th century BC, the Butterfly Valley, a natural wonder, the Acropolis of Lindos (Beautiful Castle), a medieval castle on a high hill, and Kallithea Springs, a thermal spring are the must-see places.

In addition, Anthony Quinn Bay, which should not be missed by diving enthusiasts and dedicated to the name of the world-famous actor, is one of the most special areas of the island.

Transportation From Rhodes Diagoras Airport to the city center

Rhodes Diagoras Airport is located 15 km from the city center and transportation opportunities are very limited. There are no alternatives other than buses, taxis and car rentals from the port to the city center.

Usually, there are long queues for those who want to get to the city center by taxi from Rhodes airport. Taxis operating outside the airport are usually too few to meet the density of passengers.

Passengers who want to travel by bus should walk to the bus stops 300 meters away from the port exit. Buses run on two lines; east and west. Buses run between 06:35 in the morning and 23:00 at night, approximately every 20 minutes. On busy days, there may be delays in the service.

It is possible to rent a car at the airport from companies such as Avis, Hertz, Budget, Europcar and Sixt. The only alternative to avoid the taxi and bus delays is to rent a car. Those who rent a car or want to reach the city center with their own private cars should pay attention to the fact that since there is no direct highway to the city center, there is a high probability of getting lost on the wrong road.
