History of Kyiv Boryspil Airport

On June 22, 1959, the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR ordered regular civil air traffic to be carried out in the facility, which was located near Boryspil and was then used as a military airport. On July 7, 1959, the first scheduled flight to the new airport, which was opened to civilians, took place. In November 1960, the first permanent air group consisting of Tu-104 and Antonov An-10 aircraft began to operate at the airport.

A new passenger terminal was added in 1965 so that the airport, which only operates flights to Soviet Union cities, is included in international passenger traffic. In the same year, an automatic landing assistance system was also established.

In 1963, the Regional Administration of Civil Aviation of Ukraine created the Boryspil subdivision, consisting of the airport and the air group. The air group grew significantly in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1974, it consisted of four squadrons of turbojet aircraft (Tu-104 aircraft), turbofan aircraft (Tu-134, Tu-154 aircraft) and two squadrons of turboprop aircraft (Ilyushin Il-18 aircraft).

Towards the last years of the Cold War, the Soviet Air Force continued its existence at Boryspil Airport with 1 VTAP (1st Military Aviation Transport Regiment) Ilyushin Il-76 cargo jet and it is still in the facilities today. In the 1980s Boryspil began to receive limited international flights, and additional passenger services, customs/border control groups were created for this purpose.

An airport growing with independent Ukraine

In 1993, the newly independent Ukrainian Ministry of Transport reorganized the airport as Boryspil State International Airport and created a local subdivision of Air Ukraine to serve. In the same year, the facilities were opened to all passengers and flights. In the early 2000s, Boryspil became a hub airport serving direct and transit flights of foreign airlines. From the beginning of the 2000s, the airport became one of the preferred facilities for the use of private planes. With the new runway added in 2001, 1,5 million passengers were flown that year.

The airport has managed to become one of the largest airports in Eastern Europe, with more than 6 million passengers traveling in 2008. Boryspil International Airport handles most of Ukraine’s international traffic. Therefore, since 2008, the facilities have been expanded continuously and new terminal buildings, entry and exit points and hangars have been added for the use of private jet charter services.

Transportation from Boryspil Airport to Kyiv

Boryspil airport is connected to Kyiv and the wider metropolitan area via the road network. Several bus and minibus lines serve the airport and connect to the stations closest to the airport.
