History of Zurich Airport
With the start of the first flight in Switzerland in 1921, Dübendorf Air Base became the most important airport serving in the region, but the need for a special commercial facility to replace the airport that could not meet the commercial load in the region led to a search for a place to build a new airport. The Swiss federal parliament decided in 1945 that Zurich would be the site of a large airport and sold 655 hectares of the Kloten-Bülach Artillery Garrison. Construction of the aerodrome began the following year, as Zurich gave cantonal control of the new aerodrome.
With the first plans made in 1945, the federal government focused on facilities that could handle international air traffic. The new terminal was opened in 1953 with a massive three-day air show. In 1947 the airport handled 133.638 passengers on 12.766 airline flights, and 372.832 passengers on 24.728 airline flights in 1952. The first expansion of the aerodrome was presented in 1956; The Swiss government approved the expansion budget in 1958, and the expansion was completed in 1961.
Zurich Airport, which continued to develop throughout the 70s and 80s, experienced a record increase in 2014 by carrying 25,5 million passengers, an increase of 2,5 percent compared to 2013.
The airport is now owned by the company Flughafen Zürich AG. The main shareholders include the canton of Zurich plus 33,33% and the city of Zurich with a 5% stake. No other shareholder holds more than 3%.
The airport has three airside piers, known as terminals A, B and E. These are connected to a central airside building called Airside Center constructed in 2003. In addition to the Airside Center, the ground-side terminal complex called the Airport Center consists of several buildings and includes airline check-in areas, a shopping mall, a railway station, parking lots, a bus and tram terminal. Terminal-1 building is used for Private Jet charter operations at Zurich Airport.
