Brief history of Zaragoza Airport

Construction work on Zaragoza Airport began in September 1954 with the expansion and upgrading of the existing Spanish Air Force Base located here. United States Navy engineers developed the facility as a combat standby base for temporary or interim use. The initial US construction project involved strengthening the existing 3,024 m long runway and adding 304 m of overhang at each end. Work on a new concrete runway measuring 61 by 3,718 meters with a 61 m overhang at each end began in 1956 and was completed in 1958.

On the occasion of the Zaragoza International Fair 2008, an extensive renovation work was carried out at this airport, consisting of the construction of a new terminal attached to the old terminal and several parking lots, which won first prize in the International Competition. The building, designed by Vidal y Asociados arquitectos, was opened to the public in March 2008.

At the beginning of November 2009, an instrument landing system (ILS) was installed to protect the airport from cancellations due to fog. Also since 2009, after Madrid and Barcelona, Zaragoza Airport is the third largest airport in Spain in terms of volume of goods transported. Between 2005 and 2011, this type of traffic increased by 962%.

In June 2016, Zaragoza Airport put into service the new instrument landing system ILS (Instrument Landing System) category II/III, which allows aircraft certified for this type of operation to operate in low visibility conditions (almost zero visibility).

The airfield has also been used by NASA as an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle in the event of a Transoceanic Abort Landing (TAL). The base also has a military-grade navigation system called TACAN – “Tactical Air Navigation” – which can adapt to the special guidance devices used by NASA on its shuttles.
