A brief history of Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport

In 1973, the need for a new airport for Bangkok was noticed. As a result, 8.000 acres of land were identified and purchased just 40 Kilometers east of Bangkok. The area had to be evacuated for the construction phase, but the government of the time stopped the project when faced with student protests. The project was brought back to the table in 1996, but due to the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, the project was postponed to January 2002. The project was restarted in 2002 and was planned to be completed in the last months of 2005, but due to the political turmoil in the country, the construction work of the port was delayed until mid-2006.

Suvarnabhumi Airport was officially opened on September 15, 2006 to provide limited domestic flight service. The port officially started to serve all international commercial flights on September 28, 2006.

Suvarnabhumi, the 17th busiest port in the world, had the world’s tallest freestanding control tower (132,2 meters or 434 feet) and the world’s fourth largest terminal building from 2006 to 2014.

The name of the aerodrome was officially changed to Panrawat Kittikorncharoen Suvarnabhumi Airport after a Thai singer, Panrawat Kittikorncharoen, who died in 2007. In 2019, the airport was ranked 46th in the list of the 100 best airports.

Transportation from Bangkok Airport to the city center

Suvarnabhumi Airport is one of the most accessible ports. Transportation between the airport and the city is mostly provided by the rail system. Trains called “Express Line” that run between only 2 stations and “City Line” that stop at 6 stations in the city depart every 30 minutes.

One of the alternative ways to reach the city center from the port is to stay at the port and use the airport shuttles that go to Victory Square, which is considered the center of the city. From these lines, the minibus no. 550 goes over the city, and the minibus no. 551 goes via the highway.

It is possible to reach the city center in 45 minutes by taking a taxi from the taxi stands in front of terminal exits 1 and 7. It is possible to obtain a vehicle from the car rental offices at the airport arrival and departure terminals. The most important thing to remember when renting a car is that the traffic flows on the left in Thailand.
