When was Riga Airport built?
The aerodrome was built in 1973 as an alternative to the outdated Spilve Airport. A state joint stock company owns all the shares of the airport. The owner of the state capital share is the Ministry of Transport of Latvia. The renovation and modernization of the airport was completed in 2001, which coincided with the 800th anniversary of the founding of the city. New northern terminal extensions were opened in 2006 and 2016. A maintenance, repair and overhaul facility was opened in the fall of 2006 to be operated as a joint venture between two local companies, Concors and SR-Technik. In 2010, the first private business aviation terminal of the Baltic states was opened at the airport. Thanks to the regular improvements made at the facilities, the airport has become available for private jet charters.
Major renovations have been made over the years
The airport has a two-storey passenger terminal building that has been expanded and upgraded to modern standards several times in recent years. The land side contains the main hall with a single counter with 36 rows, as well as some shops, private jet companies and the security area upstairs, while the arrivals area, baggage return and some service counters are located on the ground floor below. The air side has the old original, smaller boarding area A and departure areas B and C, which are now split into two piers used for some arrivals only. Both piers have a total of eight jetbridge stands and four walkways from the upper level, and several gates to board the buses at ground levels. There is a single airport lounge in the terminal, hosting Narvesen, Costa Coffee and TGI Fridays, among others.
The airport has a single runway with a length of 3.200 m and equipped with ILS CAT II in directions 18/36. In addition, AirBaltic and the Latvian Civil Aviation Agency maintain their headquarters at Riga International Airport.
How to get from Riga Airport to the city center?
Riga Airport is accessible by bus line 22 and mini bus line 322, operated by Rīgas Satiksme, which run between Riga city center and the airport. There are also international bus connections from the airport to cities in Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Russia and Belarus. Thanks to these connections, Riga Airport is one of the airports with the highest private jet usage in Europe.
