Brief history of Granada Airport

The beginnings of aviation in Granada are linked to Armilla airport, one of the oldest airports in Spain, which operated commercial flights until the new airport was opened. The limited success of the lines operated at Armilla and the lack of a suitable runway for new aircraft led to the construction of a new airport in the 1960s. Work began in 1970 and the airport opened for domestic and international passenger and freight traffic on 15 June 1972. The first commercial flights took place in October 1973.

In the early 1990s, with Granada set to host the 1996 Alpine Ski World Cup, airport facilities were significantly improved, notably by extending the aircraft parking area, increasing the runway length, remodelling the power station, constructing an administrative building for the Aena and other services, and renovating the terminal.

In 2006, the airport was renamed Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport as a result of government agreements with the tourism sector of the provinces of Granada and Jaén. In 2008, the port suffered a financial crisis, which led to the loss of many contracts and the loss of passengers. As the crisis continued in the following years, Aena took steps to increase the port’s passenger numbers through policy changes. The airport, which survived the crisis period with the changes made and new routes added, emerged from the crisis in 2018.
