Brief history of Tenerife South Airport
In the late 1960s the authorities of the island of Tenerife needed a new airport in a new location, as the existing airport did not meet the technical requirements due to adverse weather conditions, especially low visibility in foggy conditions.
The new airport was inaugurated on November 6, 1978 by Queen Sofía of Spain, to whom the airport was dedicated. The first flight was Iberia flight IB187 from Lanzarote, operated by a McDonnell Douglas DC-9, which landed at 10:17. The airport was built near the Tomás Zerolo airport, which closed when TFS opened. By the end of its first year, 1 million passengers passed through its gates.
In June 1980, Viasa launched flights to Caracas. This connection served a large part of the Canarian diaspora residing in Venezuela. The airline ceased operations in 1997, after which Avensa began using the route. Due to financial problems, Avensa then allowed Santa Bárbara Airlines to take over its flights to Spain in exchange for a codeshare agreement. Santa Bárbara began serving Reina Sofía Airport in October 2002 using McDonnell Douglas DC-10 equipment, but switched to Tenerife North Airport four months later.
