Tan Son Nhat Airport history

The origin of Tan Son Nhat International Airport dates back to the early 1930s when the French colonial government built a small airport with unpaved runways near the village of Tan Son Nhut, known as Tân Sơn Nhứt Airport.

In mid-1956, a 2,190 m runway was built with US assistance; the airport near Saigon became recognised as South Vietnam’s main international gateway. During the Vietnam War, Tan Son Nhut Air Base was an important facility for both the US Air Force and the Republic of Vietnam Air Force. Between 1968 and 1974, Tan Son Nhut Airport was one of the busiest military air bases in the world. Continental Airlines operated 30 Boeing 707 military charter flights per week to Tan Son Nhut Airport between 1968-74.

On 9 December 2004, United Airlines became the first US airline to fly to Vietnam since Pan Am’s last flight during the Fall of Saigon in April 1975. In 2006, Tan Son Nhat International Airport served approximately 8.5 million passengers with 64,000 aircraft movements. It has recently accounted for about two-thirds of arrivals and departures at Vietnam’s international gateway airports. Due to the increasing demand for the port, the airport is constantly being expanded by the Southern Airports Company.

The Tan Son Nhat domestic terminal served 8 million passengers in 2010, its maximum capacity. In 2014, the terminal handled more than 9 million international passengers, prompting a demand to expand the terminal. The first phase of the emergency expansion of the terminal was completed in December 2016 with the addition of 2 new jet bridges and other facilities. In September 2017, the Vietnam People’s Army transferred 21 hectares of military land around the airport to the Vietnam Airports Company for civilian use
