History of Frankfurt am Main Airport

Frankfurt Airport was established in 1936 for commercial flights only. The base was handed over to the military for service on May 6, 1940. Luftwaffe engineers made many changes at the airport and enlarged the runways and hangars during this period. During World War II, the Luftwaffe occasionally used the area as a fighter base and test station for jet aircraft.
