Brief history of Kosice Airport
Construction of the airport began in the 1950s near the suburb of Barca. In 1954 the construction of the first part of the new passenger terminal, hangar and new control tower was completed and in 1955 direct flights between Košice and Prague were launched. The power supply was upgraded in 1962 with more powerful transformers. Increased traffic required a larger passenger terminal in the mid-1960s. The establishment of the SNP Air Force Academy in 1973 strengthened aviation in the then Czechoslovak Republic. Between 1974 and 1977, the runway was extended by 1,100 m, the power supply was rebuilt and a lighting system was installed to meet CAT II ICAO specifications. Military aviation at the airport was discontinued in 2004.
Another extensive reconstruction of the runways and equipment area took place in 1992-1993. In 2001, the construction of a new terminal began, which opened in 2004 and was awarded the title of Construction of the Year 2005 in 2005. In 2004 the commercial company Letisko Košice – Airport Kosice A.S. was established, which was joined by a strategic partner in 2006. In 2007, the handling area was expanded and the number of stands increased.
After the completion of the new terminal, the airport was privatized, currently the largest share in the airport (66%) is owned by the majority shareholder KSC Holding A.S., while the remaining share (34%) is owned by the Slovak Republic.
