Kaunas Fluxus Airport is the second busiest civil airport in Lithuania after Vilnius Airport and the fourth busiest in the Baltic countries. The airport is located in the central part of Lithuania, 14 km northeast of Kaunas city center and 100 km west of the capital Vilnius.

Irish Ryanair is the main user of the airport. The airline has operated a base at Kaunas Airport since May 2010 and currently has two aircraft there. The aerodrome is mainly used for international flights, cargo and private jet flights.

The airport is owned and operated by the state-owned Kauno Aerouostas company and is fully subordinated to the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

History of Kaunas Airport

Kaunas Airport started its operations in 1988 with the relocation of the historical S. Darius and S. Girėnas Airports located in the central part of the city of Kaunas. In 1991, after the independence of Lithuania, the airport gained the status of an international airport and became a member of the Airports Council International in 1996 and started to take part in the activities of the “Lithuanian Airports” association.

Ryanair started to operate flights to Kaunas in 2004. In 2006, it announced that it had established a base in Kaunas. At the beginning of 2013, Ryanair invested more than 3 million Euros in a new aircraft maintenance and repair hangar employing 220 people in Kaunas.

In May 2013, the Government announced plans to merge Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga airports under a single company, and the plans were approved by the Lithuanian parliament in November 2013. The merger took place in 2014.

LOT Polish Airlines began operating six weekly flights from Warsaw to Kaunas Airport on May 21, 2018.

Places to visit in Kaunas

Kaunas, which stands out among European cities with its modernity, calmness and natural beauties, is a city of peace.

The main places to visit in the city are Kaunas Castle, one of the symbols of the city, Pažaislis Monastery and Church on the shore of Lake Kaunas, where the Neman River flows, City Hall built in the 16th century, St. Michael the Archangel Church in the Neo-Byzantine style built during the Russian Empire, Santaka Park located at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris Rivers, Laisvės Alėja Road, one of the most important pedestrian routes of Kaunas, and the Museum of Demons, where the works collected by the famous Lithuanian painter and professor Antanas Žmuidzinavičius are exhibited.

Transportation from the airport to Kaunas city center

There are facilities such as bus, taxi and car rental to reach the city from the port. Taxis do not have a taximeter, instead there are fixed prices set by the municipality. All taxi drivers are specially trained and licensed.

For passengers who want to reach the city center by bus, buses number 29 during the day and number 29E at night are in service. The last trip of the night buses is arranged according to the last plane to land at the airport.

Car rental companies such as Alamo, Avis, National, Payless, Sixt and Hertz provide service through their offices located in the port.
