History of Diori Hamani Airport

Niamey airport was established in 1947 during the French colonial period. In 1959, 3263 aircraft movements, 33,658 passengers and 1980 tonnes of cargo and mail were recorded. After Niger’s independence in 1960, these figures declined, with only 485 aircraft movements, 12,300 passengers and 651 tonnes of cargo and mail carried in 1962.

Amadou Cheiffou, who later became prime minister, was in command of the airport from 1970 to 1975. The airport has existed in its current form since the 1970s. On 18 February 1972, the new terminal of Aéroport International de Niamey was opened. The number of annual passengers increased from 22,151 in 1972 to 101,165 in 1973, and freight and mail from 1327 tonnes to 6770 tonnes. From 1976 to 1979, Ousmane Oubandawaki, then Minister of Defence and Transport, was the airport’s commander. A temporary peak in passenger numbers was reached in 1982, when 203,463 people travelled through the airport. From 1988 to 2004, annual passenger numbers never again exceeded 100,000. Niger experienced a serious economic crisis, which peaked in the early 1990s. Air Niger, the national airline founded in 1966, was forced to cease operations in 1993.

By decree of 22 December 1996, President Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara renamed Aéroport International de Niamey to Aéroport International Diori Hamani. Hamani Diori was Niger’s first president, who died in 1989 and ruled the country from 1960 until his overthrow in 1974. From the mid-2000s, the airport’s operating figures improved again. In the 2009 operating year it recorded 5647 aircraft movements, 154.460 passengers and 3430 tonnes of freight and mail. Scheduled flights from Niamey were offered by just under a dozen airlines in early 2015. Most had domestic services in Africa, with the exception of Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle services.

From 2016 to 2021, the military site was the last forward operating base for a Transall C-160 of the German Air Force, which maintained a MedEvac aircraft here.
