History of Changi Airport

Because Paya Lebar Airport, which was put into service in 1955, could not meet the increasing traffic in the 1980s, the expansion of the port was decided by the Singapore government. Paya Lebar expansion work was shelved due to its proximity to the city and a limited expansion.

At the same time, a new port project was considered and the Royal Air Force base in Changi was chosen as the region. The port to be established here could be enlarged day by day by filling the sea.

After a quick decision, work was started in 1975 for the establishment of the port. As part of the works, the decision to demolish 558 buildings in the region was taken and the rehabilitation works of approximately 80 hectares of swamp were started. While 200 hectares of the 870 hectares of land considered for the port was provided by leveling the existing ground, the rest was obtained by filling the sea.

The year 1981 was being considered for the opening of the port. During the construction period, many setbacks were encountered such as flooding, increased sand prices, layoffs of workers, and disruptions due to weather conditions. Despite these setbacks, the government of the time was very strict about the completion date of the port because Paya Lebar could no longer meet the passenger load.

Despite all the problems experienced, the first test flight in the port took place on May 13, 1981. After an uneventful test flight, the port opened on July 1, 1981.

Changi Airport began operations on July 1, 1981, with only one terminal and one runway. Work on the second runway was completed in 1983 and it was put into service the following year. To deal with the increasing passenger traffic, Terminal 2 became operational in November 1990 and Terminal 3 on January 1, 2007.

Over the years, Changi has also improved its connection to the city centre. In 2001, the Changi Airport Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station on the East-West Line opened. In 2008, Changi Airport Group was established as a result of the corporatization of Changi Airport. The port, which continued to grow, was noticed around the world. The port has won many awards one after another.

As the port continues to develop every year, terminal 4 started service in 2017. From the first year to this year, 10 different gardens were established throughout the port, where care was taken to provide an aesthetic appearance and opened to the visitors.
