History of Pudong International Airport
Before the establishment of Pudong International Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport was the city’s only main airport. As a result of the increased traffic in the 90s, Hongqiao International Airport was considered to be expanded, but due to the lack of space in the urban area surrounding the airport, a new airport had to be built.
The location of the new airport was decided in the Pudong area, and construction of the first phase of Pudong International Airport was started in October 1997. After 2 years of construction work, the airport was opened on October 1, 1999. A second runway was opened on March 17, 2005 as the final link of the first stage.
Immediately after the completion of the first stage and the start of operation of the airport, the second stage was implemented and the construction of the second terminal building and the third runway started in December 2005 and ended on March 26, 2008. In November 2011, Pudong Airport received approval from the national government for a new round of expansion that includes two runways. The final expansion of the second stage was completed in 2015.
On December 29, 2015, the third stage of the airport started and with this expansion, it was decided to build a new southern satellite terminal. After the satellite terminal was completed in 2019, Pudong International Airport reached an annual passenger capacity of 80 million and became one of the 10 busiest ports in the world.
