History of Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport

In January 1947, the Zimbabwean government began an attempt to find a suitable site for the construction of a new airport, as the location of Belvedere Airport, Zimbabwe’s main international harbour, made it difficult to land and inadequate for passenger capacity.

In 1949 the government purchased the Kentucky and Adair farms east of Salisbury for the construction of the new airport. Also in 1949, the Minister of Mines and Transport established an Airport Panel to co-ordinate the construction of the airport. The panel consisted of representatives of the relevant government departments, the City of Salisbury and the Rhodesian Railway.

In 1951 the government announced that the airport would be developed as a joint user airport for both civil aviation and the Southern Rhodesian Air Force (SRAF). Construction of the airport began shortly afterwards and an 8,400 ft runway was completed in September 1951. It was originally envisaged that the airport would be completed by 1954. However, it was not completed until two years later as the government ran out of funds in October 1952 and had to temporarily suspend the project. The new Salisbury Airport was finally opened on 1 July 1956 by the Government of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.

The airport was renamed Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on 9 November 2017 to honour President Robert Mugabe, who played an important role in Zimbabwean politics.

Since 2000, there has been a decline in tourist arrivals to Zimbabwe as a result of internal political conflicts in the country. In August 2018, Boeing announced that it was in discussions with Zimbabwean authorities to establish a regional hub for Boeing aircraft to provide training and specialist technical services at the airport.
