History of Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport
Before Adnan Menderes Airport, formerly named as Cumaovasi Airport, was rebuilt, civil flights in Izmir were operated from Cigli Airport. Cumaovasi airport was only operational when Cigli Airport was under repair. However, while the runway was small, it was insufficient for the landing of large-bodied aircraft, and night flights could not be performed due to technical inadequacy.
With the increasing need, plans for the renewal of Cumaovasi Airport and its allocation to civil flights were made in the early 1980s. The foundation of the airport was laid by President Kenan Evren in May, 1984. Named after one of the former prime ministers, Adnan Menderes, and opened with the participation of Prime Minister Turgut Ozal on November 17, 1987, the airport was the second largest port in Turkey at that time, after Istanbul Atatürk Airport.
In 1998, due to the increasing demand in the region, the State Airports Authority decided that the domestic terminal is moved to the international terminal and a new international terminal is built instead of the old domestic terminal. On August 16, 2004, it was announced that Havas and Bayindir Insaat Joint Venture Group were awarded the tender, which was held with the build-operate-transfer model, with 125 million Euros, in return for an operation period of 6 years, 7 months and 29 days. In June 2005, it was announced that 60 percent of Havas shares were sold to TAV Airports by Ciner Group.
The groundbreaking ceremony of the terminal was held on September 22, 2005. The new international terminal, costing 150 million euros, was opened on September 9, 2006. The old international terminal was renovated and opened to service as a domestic terminal after May 11, 2007.
TAV won the tender held by DHMI on November 17, 2011 for the transfer of the operating rights of the port until the end of 2032 and the renewal of the domestic terminal, with a price of 610 million Euros. The new domestic terminal, costing 266 million euros, opened on March 17, 2014.
