History of Senegal Dakar Airport
During the World War II, Dakar Airport was an important junction. After the war, the port served as an important stop for routes between Europe and South America, along with the Canary Islands, until the mid-1970s. The aerodrome lost its function as a stop with the introduction of ultra long range jets in the 70s.
The aerodrome was a Space Shuttle landing site until 1987; then it was determined that a possible problem with the runway could damage the shuttle during landing, and this duty of the port was terminated.
Following the opening of Blaise Diagne International Airport on December 7, 2017, Senghor Airport started to offer only charter flights and scheduled cargo services as of March 2020.
