Parma Airport history from 1923 to today

The airport was built in 1923 as a military airfield and was destroyed during the Second World War. In the post-war period it was first temporarily adapted for general aviation. In 1991 the “Giuseppe Verdi” airport was officially opened. In 1983 it was taken over by a privately established company SO.GE.A.P. S.p.A., whose shareholders are the local authorities, some private individuals and the aviation club.

In 2008, after obtaining authorisation from ENAC and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the process of privatisation of the management company was initiated and successfully concluded, leading to an Austrian fund led by Meinl Bank controlling 67.95% of the share capital. After more than 15 years of waiting, SO.GE.A.P. received the 20-year concession of the airport from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in January 2014.

The civil aviation authority ENAC has described these airports as unprofitable “bonsai airports”
