Hannover-Langenhagen Airport is an airport in Langenhagen (District of Hannover). It is the largest airport and the most important international hub in the state of Lower Saxony. It is a preferred port for private jet flights to Lower Saxony. It ranks 8th in the list of commercial airports in Germany in terms of passenger numbers. In terms of tourism air traffic, Hannover Airport is the leading airport in Northern Germany and the home base of TUIfly. For cargo, the airport is a FedEx hub and an overnight airmail location.

Hannover Airport has three passenger terminal halls, referred to as Terminal A, B and C. The landside areas with shops, restaurants and travel agencies are interconnected, but each has a separate airside area with a few more facilities. Terminals A and B each have six boarding gates equipped with jet bridges, while Terminal C has eight boarding gates. Additional bus gates are available in each concourse. Terminal A underwent a major renovation as the first concourse from April 2013 and reopened on July 9, 2014.

History of Hannover Airport

Hannover Airport was opened in 1952 in Langenhagen, on the site of an old airport within the city limits of Hannover. In 1973, two modern terminals were opened, renowned for their compact design. These terminals became the archetype of Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow. These terminals A and B are still in service today.

In the 1990s, trials of intercontinental service to the United States and Canada were halted due to low passenger numbers. In 1998, the largest terminal, C, was opened to handle more passengers, adding 8 boarding gates and 3 bus departure gates. It can handle 33 aircraft simultaneously, 20 of which can use the Jetway-equipped aircraft stands. All three terminals are capable of handling a Boeing 747. From 1957 to 1990 the airport hosted the Internationale Luft- und Raumfahrtausstellung, Germany’s largest air show.

In 2000, an S-Bahn connection was established between the airport and Hamelin via Hanover Main Station. This replaced the airport shuttle bus, which ran more frequently than the S-Bahn, every 20 minutes, but took longer to reach the airport and train station. The train service was extended to Paderborn in 2003.

TUIfly, which has a base at Hannover Airport, significantly reduced its flights in 2008 and 2009 and in late 2009 handed over all non-traditional holiday routes to Air Berlin. In 2010, Germanwings, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, opened its sixth base in Hannover. In 2017, the now defunct airline Air Berlin completely reduced its flight schedule and operated its last flight from Hanover in March 2017.

Hannover Airport has struggled to generate increased demand in recent years, possibly due to an unwillingness or inability to attract Europe’s low-cost carriers to serve the airport. New routes from network carriers to their hubs were opened and closed after one season/year due to low demand. Although traffic increased satisfactorily in the late 1990s, little growth has been recorded in the last decade.
