History of Muscat Airport from the Gulf War to the present

The aerodrome was opened as Seeb International Airport in 1973, replacing a smaller airport in Bayt al Falaj. It was closed to civilian flights during the 1991 Gulf War and hosted the Royal Air Force. The name of the airport, which was reopened to civil aviation after the war, was changed to Muscat International Airport on February 1, 2008.

Due to the increasing traffic, it became necessary to establish a new terminal building in 2007. The new terminal building, the construction of which was started in the same year, started service on March 20, 2018. The port, where the Aaronia AARTOS C-UAS drone detection system was installed in 2019, became the first international airport in the world to have an operational drone detection system.
