History of Addis Ababa Bole Airport
In 1960 Ethiopian Airlines realized that the runway at Lidetta was too short for a new generation of jets. Thus, the construction of a new airport in Bole was brought up to the agenda. With a quick work, the new runway and control tower became operational by December 1962. In 1997, an expansion plan for the airport was announced.
This expansion was done in three phases. Phase One: Adding a parallel runway and widening the old runway. Phase Two: Construction of a brand new terminal with ample parking space, shopping complex and restaurants. Phase Three: Construction of the 38 m control tower (twice the height of the previous one) and installation of new electrical and firefighting equipment.
In 2003, the new international passenger terminal was opened. The new terminal building has become Africa’s largest airport passenger terminal. A new cargo terminal and maintenance hangar was opened in 2006 with a delay of 5 months. In 2010, port authorities announced the new expansion plan, and on January 27, 2019, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed inaugurated the new Terminal 2 building.
Addis Ababa travel guide
Addis Ababa, one of the cities with the highest quality of life in Africa, is one of the most beautiful cities to be seen in the African continent with its historical museums, internationally renowned cuisine, and different style architecture.
Among the locations that draw attention in the city are Addis Mercato, the largest market in Africa, St. George’s Cathedral and Museum that has become the symbol of city, Meskel Square and Museum where festivals are held, the Ethiopian National Museum where artifacts collected from all over Africa are exhibited, and Entoto Hill, the highest point of Addis Ababa.
Transportation to Addis Ababa Bole Airport
In Addis Ababa, one of the most developed cities in Ethiopia, public transportation services are not flawless. The schedules of the buses departing from the port to the city center are quite irregular. Passengers who want to reach the city center by bus may sometimes have to wait for hours for the buses departing from the stops outside the port.
Minibuses, which have a more organized structure compared to buses, start service early in the morning and end at 21 in the evening. Taxis located outside the port are relatively more comfortable, but these vehicles are not of a standard structure, mostly private vehicles provide taxi service and there is no clarity about the fare. The second and slightly more reliable option for taxis is the Mercedes brand taxis of the National Tour Operator (NTO), located at the airport taxi stand. Although NTO Taxis are more comfortable and their prices are fixed, it is possible to experience difficulties due to the insufficient number of vehicles.
There are offices of car rental services in the port, but the traffic rules are not well established throughout the city, and care should be taken. Due to the lack of traffic lights in the city or their inoperability, there may be problems at many roads and intersections.
