Mönchengladbach Airport is a small airport located about 5 kilometres northeast of Mönchengladbach. It is mainly used for business private jet flights. It is operated by Flughafengesellschaft Mönchengladbach GmbH, a subsidiary of Flughafen Düsseldorf GmbH. Düsseldorf International Airport is less than 20 kilometres away.

Brief history of Mönchengladbach Airport
In 1955, the British Army of the Rhine conducted an exercise in accordance with the then NATO rapid reaction strategy. They built a simple ‘field-built’ airfield on a grassy area for an air landing exercise. After completing this exercise, the British Army of the Rhine handed the field over to the Mayor of Mönchengladbach for use as an airfield. The airfield was put into service as a small runway for gliders. In 1957 a hangar was built and the following year a control tower and passenger terminal were constructed. Construction of the 1,200 metre runway, which is still in use today, began in 1970 and was completed in 1973.
From 1996 to 2002, the Belgian airline VLM operated direct flights to London City Airport with Fokker 50 aircraft, operating 24 flights a week in both directions. From 1996 to 1999, the British airline Debonair operated flights to London Luton Airport, and when Debonair went into administration, the flights were taken over by European Air Express, which also operated flights to Munich and Sylt/Westerland until it ceased operations in 2007.
The airport underwent a rebranding process in 2016, changing its name from Düsseldorf Mönchengladbach Airport to simply Mönchengladbach Airport and changing its corporate design to match the new design of its main shareholder Düsseldorf Airport
