Glasgow Airport, formerly known as Abbotsinch Airport, is one of Scotland’s major airports. The airport is located in Paisley, 15,9 km west of Glasgow city centre.
In 2019, Glasgow Airport became the second busiest aerodrome in Scotland after Edinburgh Airport, serving 8,84 million passengers with an annual change of 8,4% due to the pandemic. According to 2019 data, Glasgow Airport is the ninth busiest port in the United Kingdom.
British Airways, easyJet and Loganair are among the most important companies operating in the airport. Other major airlines using Glasgow as a base include Jet2 and TUI Airways (formerly Thomson Airways). Glasgow Airport opened in 1966 and initially flights were only to major destinations in the UK and Europe.

History of Glasgow Airport
Glasgow Airport started to serve as a military base in 1933, like many airports in Europe. After the outbreak of World War II, the airport was used as a training base for the Royal Navy until the end of the war. Glasgow Airport, which was used as a military base until 1960 after the war, was opened to civil aviation in the same year due to the need for a new aerodrome for the city, and renovation works were started in the port area. Renovation work ended in 1966 and official flights began within that year.
While the airport continued its standard activities in the 1970s and 1980s, a major renovation work was started for Glasgow International Airport in 1989. The renovation work was completed in 1996. By 1996, Glasgow was handling over 5,5 million passengers a year, making it the fourth largest airport in England.
Although the airport underwent minor renovations in the 2000s, no major changes were made.

How long does it take from Glasgow airport to the city center?

Car rental companies such as Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, EURpcar, Hertz, National and Thrifty, Glasgow have sales desks within the airport.
Passengers who want to reach the airport with their private vehicles can reach the port in 15 minutes via the M8 Highway. Alternatively, it is possible to reach the aerodrome in 20 minutes by passing on the A814 Highway from the M8 Highway.
