When was Malta Airport established?

The first civilian airport was built in Ta’Qali, followed by Faral Far (RAF Hal Far) and Luqa. During the World War II, when the airports in Ta’Qali and Hal Far were severely damaged, all of the civilian operations were carried out via Luqa Airport. The increase in passenger transport and aircraft movements in the region necessitated the construction of a civil air terminal. Preparations began in 1956 and the British Government financed the project. Malta’s new passenger air terminal at Luqa was opened on March 31, 1958 by Sir Robert Laycock, then Governor of Malta. The air terminal consisted of two floors, including a restaurant, post office, cable and wireless office, private areas serving private aircraft charter services, and some basic facilities such as a viewing balcony for the public.

When the expanded runway and renovated terminals proved insufficient, construction of a new and longer runway was started in October 1977, and work on the expansion and renovation of the air terminal began in the same year. An entrance hall and another VIP lounge were added, and the original part of the terminal building was used for departures. In 1987, even these renovations were not enough for the facilities, so the construction of the new terminal building, which is now called Gudja, was started.

The Air Force also uses the same runway

The foundation stone for the current air terminal in Gudja was laid in September 1989 and inaugurated in record time of 29 months later in February 1992. Malta International Airport became fully operational on 25 March 1992 and the former Luqa passenger terminal was effectively closed after 35 years. With this renovation work, private jet traffic has increased significantly.

The Malta Armed Forces Air Wing is located at Malta International Airport. The Air Wing terminal consists of six hangars. Some hangars located here are also used by private jet charter companies for their parking from time to time.
