History of Exeter Airport from past to today
Exeter was one of many state cities in the late 1930s that provided a licensed airport in part to prepare for the development of air traffic, as well as to be used in any future European wars. In 1932, the Exeter City Council commissioned Commander William Francis Forbes-Semphill, Master of Semphill and heir to Lord Sephill, to conduct an aerial survey for the best airport site. After various searches, the land selection became clear in 1934 and the foundation of the airport was laid in 1935. The first landing at the airport was made on May 10, 1937, shortly after the foundation was laid. The airport was officially opened on May 31, 1937.
The airport was enlarged with various improvements until 1939, when the World War II broke out. With the start of the war, the airport was closed to civilian flights and continued to serve as a military airport. The airport, whose activities decreased after the war, was only able to start serving civil aviation again in 1952. A new terminal building was opened in the early 1980s and several improvements were made in the following years, including a runway extension, to make Exeter an important airport in the West Country.
Between 1980 and 2000, the airport continued to grow with many renovations. In 2007, the airport broke its own record by welcoming more than 1 million passengers a year for the first time, but then passenger volume declined to 931.000 passengers in 2018.
In 2019, passenger numbers once again crossed the 1 million mark as Ryanair launched several new flights to the airport. However, due to the termination of the operations of Flybe on March 5, 2020, which accounts for more than 80% of the airport’s passenger traffic, there has been a sharp decrease in the number of passengers in 2020.
