History of Quatro de Fevereiro Airport in the shadow of civil war

Construction of the airport began in 1951 to serve the capital of the former Portuguese Overseas Province of Angola. It was opened by Craveiro Lopes in 1954, named Aeroporto Presidente Craveiro Lopes in honor of the Portuguese President of the time, Craveiro Lopes.

In August, September, and October 1975, the airport hosted tens of thousands of mostly white Portuguese-born Angolans who had camped and fled to Lisbon (during Operation Airlift) in the weeks before Angola’s Independence awaiting evacuation flights.

Following Angola’s independence from Portugal (in November 1975), the aerodrome was renamed Aeroporto Quatro de Fevereiro Internacional (Fourth February International Airport) to commemorate the events that led to the state’s independence.

Angola, declaring its independence, could not carry out modernization work throughout the port due to financial difficulties for a long time. A new expansion plan was issued in 2016 for the port, which was last expanded in 2009. However, considering the limited growth opportunities of the existing port, it was decided to build a new port 40 km away from the capital.
