Since then, the airport has become one of the four hubs of the low-cost airline Viva Aerobus and one of the hubs of the airline Volaris.

A third terminal was added to the two terminals (Terminal 1 for charter flights and Terminal 2 for scheduled flights). The third terminal, totaling 42,000 m² and costing 100 million USD, was inaugurated on May 17, 2007. Terminal 1 had been closed since October 2005, when the airport was hit by Hurricane Wilma. Since then, charter flights have been operated mainly from Terminal 2.

A second runway was built parallel to the first runway with a spacing of 1420 meters. The new runway required the construction of a second tower. This tower is the tallest in Latin America at 97 meters. Following privatization, the airport has been operated by the private group ASUR (Aeropuertos del SUReste = Southeast Airports) since 1999.
