The history of Cologne Bonn Airport, which is an important location in cargo transportation
The airport was first opened for military flights in 1913 and was used extensively by the Luftwaffe during the World War II. With the end of the war, the British army took over the aerodrome and made expansion works by building a 1.866 m runway at the airport. In 1951, the airport was opened to civil air traffic, replacing the old Cologne Butzweilerhof Airport. Two additional runways and a new passenger terminal were built in the 1950s and 1960s.
Cologne Bonn Airport was chosen as the European hub by the United Parcel Service (UPS) in 1986, and UPS started to serve here. In the late 1990s the airport embarked on an expansion program. Several new parking lots and a second terminal were built, and a new long-distance train station opened in 2004.
Coinciding with the launch of several low-cost airlines in Germany, the airport started to host these new businesses. Germanwings and TUIfly started their operations from Cologne/Bonn as headquarters in the fall of 2002. In 2003, the number of passengers increased by 43% compared to 2002. EasyJet and Wizz Air joined these airlines in late 2003. In 2006, Canadian Forces began using the airport as a staging area to transport troops and supplies to support humanitarian missions and potential counter-terrorism roles.
In 2006, the airport opened a massive extension to the European cargo building at a cost of over $130 million. After this improvement, Cologne Bonn Airport became one of the few airports for cargo transportation in Germany and Europe.
Today, 60 airline companies provide services to 39 countries with 130 flight points from the airport in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
