Luxembourg Airport has changed owners many times throughout its history

Declaring itself as neutral at the start of World War II, Luxembourg was occupied by Germany on May 10, 1940, and on May 21, the Luftwaffe assigned the Jagdgeschwader 53, a Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter, to the airport. JG 53 fought against the French and British Expeditionary Forces in France during the Battle of France in May and June. In addition, Jagdgeschwader 52 units used Bf 109s at Sandweiler Airport during the war. JG 52 moved to France on 29 May, but remained in Luxembourg until 18 August, when JG 53 approached the English Channel to participate in the Battle of Britain.

Sandweiler Airport was not used by the Luftwaffe until September 1944, during the period of Aufklärungsgruppe 123, a reconnaissance unit that flew the Henschel Hs 126, a two-seat reconnaissance and observation aircraft. AKG 123 moved east into Germany a few days after the United States Army passed through Luxembourg and cleared the country of occupied German forces.

United States Army combat engineers arrived in Sandweiler in mid-September 1944 and conducted minor restructuring to prepare the airspace for Ninth Air Force warplanes. The Airport Advanced Landing Area was designated “A-97” Sandweiler and opened on 18 September.

Sandweiler Airport was used by the Americans as a transport supply airfield for the remainder of the war and also to evacuate war casualties to Britain. It was returned to the control of Luxembourg on August 15, 1945.

Significant growth after the war

Between 1975 and 2004, the airport expanded in facilities and additional buildings were included in the facilities. In the same period, the importance given to VIP services for private aircraft was increased. Luxembourg Airport was built in a high security area to handle the transport of valuable goods such as art and jewellery. In 2015, the airline with the largest share of the airport’s total passenger volume was Luxair with a 63% share and 1,69 million passengers.

Despite the small size of airport, it is one of the indispensable airports of the region as it does business with 4,4 million passengers, 957.000 tons of cargo, 7.400 parking spaces, more than 86 direct flight points and 16 different airlines in 2019.
