A brief history of London Stansted Airport
The airport opened in 1943 and was used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the United States Army Air Forces during World War II with the name RAF Stansted Mountfitchet as a bombing airfield and a major maintenance depot.
After the Americans withdrew on August 12, 1945, Stansted was taken over by the Air Ministry, and Maintenance Unit 263 was used by the RAF for storage. Also, between March 1946 and August 1947, Stansted served to house German prisoners of war.
In 1949, control of the port was transferred to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The airport was used as a base by several UK charter airlines over the years. Beginning in 1966, after Stansted was placed under the control of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the airport was used by holiday rental operators seeking to avoid higher operating costs from Heathrow and Gatwick.
The current terminal building was designed by the Foster + Partners architectural office, which was commissioned in 1981. As part of the development, a railway branch was built to the airport and Stansted Airport railway station was opened in 1991. A major expansion program for the existing terminal was undertaken between 2007 and 2009, adding approximately 5.900 m2 of floor space to make room for additional baggage carousels.
